Statement: Paris Agreement to come into force

Please see International Policy Director Tamar Lawrence-Samuel’s statement below:

“Many governments have shown their commitment to the Paris Agreement through early entry into force, but this alone will not protect people around the world from the worst impacts of climate change. The emissions and finance pledges made in the Paris Agreement as they stand will not avoid climate catastrophe. The true test begins now: how will governments live up to their obligations and do their fair share?

Global North countries–those with the largest historical emissions–are responsible for this crisis yet are not doing their fair share to cut emissions and support the just transition from fossil fuels. And we know why — the fossil fuel industry is interfering in climate policy making to suit its interests. A critical first step in solving the climate crisis must be protecting policy making from fossil fuel industry interference. Parties must kick big polluters out.”
