Act now: Stop Big Tobacco’s deadly influence

Cigarette Butts

Every year, tobacco-related diseases kill more than seven million people around the world. Smoking remains the world’s leading cause of preventable death.

Thanks to the support of members like you, we helped secure a strong global tobacco treaty, which gives countries tools to pass policies that protect people from this deadly industry. The treaty has already brought down smoking rates and saved countless lives. But Big Tobacco is using all the tools at its disposal to weaken and water down public health laws around the world.

With your support, governments around the world are standing up to Big Tobacco’s bullying and policy interference.

And right now, we have a chance to come together and remove Big Tobacco’s biggest foothold in the U.N. system. Big Tobacco has long abused its partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to push its deadly agenda. And this is our time to stop it!

Write to the Director-General of the ILO and urge him to cut all ties with Big Tobacco!

Since 2003, when people like you helped secure the adoption of the global tobacco treaty, Big Tobacco has worked tirelessly to undermine the treaty’s implementation. In addition to launching aggressive lawsuits meant to intimidate governments and public health advocates and hiring armies of lobbyists to influence policy talks, Big Tobacco uses front groups and gobs of cash to keep a seat at the table.

That’s why Japan Tobacco and a tobacco industry front group fund the ILO, to the tune of $15 million. What Big Tobacco gets in return — legitimacy and access to U.N. decision makers — is priceless.

It is time for the ILO to cut ties with Big Tobacco. Will you write to the Director-General of the ILO and urge him pass a policy ending this dangerous relationship when it comes up for a vote on November 1.

Together, our voices are more powerful than the money of a corrupt and deadly industry. If enough of us speak out, we can protect public health policies that will save millions of lives.
