In 2008, the U.S. Conference of Mayors resolved to phase out city spending on bottled water.
The resolution was authored by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and sponsored by mayors from 17 major cities. It came on the heels of city-level actions by more than 60 mayors nationwide.
States and dozens more cities have since acted on the resolution. Actions by mayors such as R.T. Rybak of Minneapolis (pictured) have helped promote public water systems and saved millions of taxpayer dollars.
