STATEMENT: Trump administration attempts to withhold WHO funding

Today, the Trump administration announced it would attempt to put a hold on the World Health Organization’s funding amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The United States is currently the largest donor to the WHO.

Please see below for a statement from Corporate Accountability Executive Director Patti Lynn.

“The Trump administration’s legally questionable attempt to withhold funding from the World Health Organization in the midst of a global pandemic is morally reprehensible. This is cruelty and politicking in place of diplomacy. WHO’s work protects people’s health and lives around the world, especially in the Global South. This politically motivated action will cost human lives at a time when the world needs to come together in the face of a deadly virus that threatens us all, albeit unequally. While the United States has not always negotiated in good faith at the WHO, its funding supports life-saving programs and initiatives the world over. Congress should do all in its power to prevent this devastating action from taking effect. As people living in the US, we must hold the Trump Administration accountable, and live up to our humanitarian obligations in this moment.”
