STATEMENT: World Trade Organization correctly sides with public health over corporate profits

Today, the World Trade Organization (WTO) issued its much anticipated decision ruling in favor of Australia’s plain packaging law. This deals a huge blow to the tobacco industry, which has vehemently opposed the country’s extensive plain packaging policy for years.

Below is a quote from Corporate Accountability’s Associate Campaign Director Michél Legendre.

“The World Trade Organization’s landmark decision correctly puts public health over corporate profits. The ruling bolsters and underscores the legality of plain packaging policies, which Big Tobacco has fought unsuccessfully for years. WTO’s landmark decision clears the way for more countries to implement this and other public health policies that rein in not only Big Tobacco, and paves the way for curbing other abusive industries.”
